Books on the Move, started by Pages & Chapters, kicked off March 2013. It is a book giveaway campaign designed to spread and promote literacy in Kansas City and beyond. It all began with the idea of getting books to circulate our city and be shared as a common practice. Current literacy research indicates that homes with more books have higher reading levels. Sounds like common sense, right? Well, many homes in Kansas City do not have a plethora of books. You might say, well, they can just go to a library. Yes, they can, but for some families transportation may not be easily accessible and there’s a time limit on how long they can have the books checked out. With Books on the Move, books are distributed throughout the city on one day in March and one in September. These books are theirs to keep or they can share them when they are finished reading them. People can leave their finished books at bus stops for others to pick up and read. They can share with other family members or give back to their child’s school when they are finished reading them.
It is truly inspiring to see the faces of moms and kids who get to pick out a pile of books to take home, or the dad who gets to take books back to his kids, or the older couple who take the bus a lot and would love to have some reading material. Pages & Chapters would love for other cities to start this movement so books can circulate all over! It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3.
1. Do a book drive.
2. Gather and organize volunteers.
3. Go! Plan a day to go around your city to distribute books.
Will you start your own? Or join us in Kansas City?
